01The Mesmerizing Illustrations by Michael MacRaeSo You Have Come To Visit Me – “In the darkness she knows all. She feels every drop upon waxy leaves as though they were her own skin. She does not exist in these woods as some have mistaken, she is a part of them. This place, as in all places not a quiver nor shiver goes unnoticed. So she whispers this time, not with a command but with a query. With a hushed tone, inaudible to any listening ear. In the mist of night a thing had changed that even she could not foresee. And it left its mark of soiled earth and caustic leaves.”

These mesmerizing illustrations are by Michael MacRae, a Turkish artist based in Vancouver.

02The Mesmerizing Illustrations by Michael MacRaeThose Who Play for Ghosts – “There are pieces written for the ones forgotten. They linger unmoving while their shriveled hearts long for the dulcet tunes of a living, breathing soul.”

11The Mesmerizing Illustrations by Michael MacRaeComing Into Being – “The forest lay parallel to the ground as a mesh of splintered pines and birch greyed from age and ash leaving the entrance exposed for all to see. There he stepped alone from the iron doors tucked into the rock just so, and there alone he took his first strides into the re-incarnated landscape with his purpose as of yet undefined.”

12The Mesmerizing Illustrations by Michael MacRaeRid of Former Ties – “His initial thoughts were primordial and not for many hours did the fragmented memories coalesce to make sense of the world he found himself in. Ancient machinery, even in its time having been hastily ramshackeled together, now sits stale and frigid though miraculously functional. Everything was the same but devoid of the feverish activity and echoing calls of the loudspeakers that beckoned him to his slumber over a century ago. The gallery was still. Long before his new brain could recall the words to theorize what events took place in his absence he knew that everything was exactly as he had wanted it. Everything was as it should be.”

14The Mesmerizing Illustrations by Michael MacRaeA Rather Hasty Retreat – “He had little time to consider his snow clogged boots and frozen limbs when they began to sprout from the earth before him. Sensing his quickened pace, they hastened their efforts and called upon the spirits that loomed in the outskirts of the village to aid in their pursuit. These ghosts hold fast to tradition, crossing the boundary seemed an incomprehensible feat. None had done it, why, this time, should he? It was not until the last stretch that they knew. It was not until then that they became angry. But it was too late and his lead was too great.”

18The Mesmerizing Illustrations by Michael MacRaeConstruct a Shield from Thine Own Flesh – “Carefully choosing every word, every phrase, from countless sources, he built himself a script. And in merging this tome with the other in just such a way, he created a powerful hybrid of of ancient charm and modern conjuration. This, if all goes accordingly, will keep him safe, he thought.”

19The Mesmerizing Illustrations by Michael MacRaeThat Was the Most Fun I’ve Ever Had – “Exhausted, bloodied and with newfound appreciation for the fragility of modern automobiles the two sat on the side of the road with thousand yard stares. “So… Where to now?” he asked after lighting his cigarette. A long moment passed before she spoke “I think that was the most fun I have ever had.”
