Angelarium: Seraphim by Peter Mohrbacher

15ZADKIEL, ANGEL OF MERCY

A modern and surreal interpretation of a classic fantasy trope. Peter Mohrbacher is creating original imaginative illustrations of lesser known angels.

“It was the names that got me inspired.

Once I’d read the names of the Angels, I knew this was a project I wanted to take on. That was back in 2005. Since then, Angelarium has been a part of my life every single day. Even when I’m not paying attention to it, it’s gone out on the internet and had a life of its own. The name of the project has come to define the idea of surreal angelic figures and the fan base around it has re-inspired the new designs.” Peter Mohrbacher

01EISTIBUS, ANGEL OF DIVINATION

We ground leaves from the white vine
with flowers from the cliff
and slipped it into our blood,
asking of the skies
if the rains would come.
Fires move at sea.

—–

It was ordained
Each footfall pressed into its place
Every word spoken to its rhythm
We dance and he sees us dancing
If you wish to know, just ask
Eistibus will tell you

02SIMIKIEL, ANGEL OF VENGEANCE

“Every path, every streak of cloud, points to the same bed.
I keep my wounds fresh for her so she can see their depth.”

– traveler’s diary, found outside Amman

—-

Call his name and he shall come
Speak your words of betrayal and he will be at your side
Pierce the sword into the hearts of thine enemies
Gain retribution but be warned,
for vengeance carries a double edged sword
Do harm upon the undeserving
he shall bring his wrath upon you three fold

05ZACHRIEL, ANGEL OF MEMORY

petals placed in copper bowls
just outside the door
strings of bells in wooden fences
for the wind to move
boats of paper lowered into
the Euphrates
lanterns burning in martyria
beneath our homes

        (offerings)
—-

For he who holds the memory of man
For he whose arcane business is long forgotten
Why should he bless you?
If you cannot even remember his face
He who holds the past upon his shoulders
And the future in his hands
Hail Zachriel, Angel of Memory

03Suphlatus, Angel of Dust

04HASMED, ANGEL OF ANNIHILATION

“No fiction like permanence, no folly like pride…”

-Noah

—-

“In heaven Moses came upon the five angels of divine punishment
Among them was Hasmed, Angel of Annihilation.

For all the forces of creation in the heavens and earth there is but one undoer
To hear his voice is to know that you are deaf
To see his face is to know that you are blind
To feel his touch is to be no more”

-Unknown

08AZRAEL, ANGEL OF DEATH

“Strip from me the garments of my thoughts,
my friendships my name, and what then remains?
Do not mourn what never was. Death is fallacy.”

– final teaching of Avajana, the Irenic

—-
I have watched you since you were born
I wrote your name in my book as you came into this world
I have had an eye watching your entire life
See now, your name fades with time
And now you shall return from whence you came
Delivered from this mortal coil

Let this apple take your body from you
Let my hand guide you to your rightful place
For I am your shepherd

Blessed are the dead
And now you are among them
Delivered from this mortal coil

09MATARIEL, ANGEL OF RAIN

I
The pressure in the air changes, and the camels
lift their heads. Women wearing oils sing,
“Matariel, Matariel,” and come into the tents.

III
Would the richest earth sate the olive grove?
What can crystal yield? Stone of aqueducts
sings, “Matariel,” for what it makes whole.

II
The newborn sings, “Matariel,”
in memory of her loss.

IV
I faced you at Samarkand as it wet our plate,
dripping through the chain mail beneath
to cool the skin. “Matariel,” you sang,
and I lowered my shield.

—-
O lonely fountain, bless us mortals that dwell beneath you
Let our gratefulness abate your sadness
Let our prayers reach you, lonely Matariel
All men and beasts seek your embrace
We beg that you may stretch your hand out to us
So we may continue to praise your generosity
O great muse of rain, O sustainer of life
We patiently await your blessing

10URIEL, ANGEL OF FLAME

Lightning strikes a forest
on the edge of a savanna –

Antelope watch
beneath acacia
like ghosts of the mud
as an ape dips a branch
into the blaze
and holds it aloft
—-

Feel the embrace of fire and rejoice
You are free at last angel of flame
Let your purifying embrace take us in whole
Bring to us your pure kiss
And free the sinners from their torment-

Hail Uriel! Lord of purification and bringer of flame!

11SHELEGIEL, ANGEL OF SNOW

Shelegiel dances

silently

upon the house of man

leaves no trace upon the sleeping land

12

13LELIEL, ANGEL OF NIGHT

The beat of her wings rests upon our ears
like distant thunder
like the strike of the moon across the hot black sky
She is a rising star and a falling thought
the sweet caress of the mind washed smooth by sleep

Beautiful Leliel, Angel of Night
you’ve been away too long

14SAHAQIEL, ANGEL OF THE SKY

The scholar fashioned wings
of his design
and leapt from the citadel,
drifting amid radiance
toward injury and fame.
What bondage is weight?
Even in burial
we ascend.

—-

I am thy protector
and thy keeper

I am thy shield
and thy restraint

I am the light which illuminates thy life
and burns thine eyes

I am the barrier which separates thee from the divine

I am Sahaqiel, Angel of the Sky
