Song of the Day: Carmen by Stromae

“Carmen” was released as the sixth single of Racine Carrée on March 31, 2015, a long two years after the album’s original 2013 release.

Lyrics:

Translation

[Verse 1]
Love is like Twitter
You’re only a novice at it only for 48 hours
First you sign up, and afterwards you follow
You lose your mind with it and then you end up alone
Beware!
And beware of those who “like” you
Their plastic smiles are often hits by hashtag
Beware!
Ah, of friends, buddies, and followers
Dont be mistaken,it’s only a false popularity. 14

[Chorus]
Beware!
If you love yourself
Beware of me!
If I like myself
Beware of us! Beware of them! Beware of you!
And after all its each man for himself
And this is how we love love love love,
It is all consumerism, ism, ism, ism
And this is how we love love love love,
It is all consumerism, ism, ism, ism
And this is how we love love love love,
It is all consumerism, ism, ism, ism

[Verse 2]
Love is just a love-child of consumerism
It will always always always want more options,
Do you want, do you want love of suspect origin [1]
Offer and demand for you and only you
Beware!
I know all of its dangers already
I’ve kept my ticket [2], and if needs be i’ll change my booking
Beware!
And if needs be I’ll get revenge
This bird from hell, I’ll put it in a cage
For I control it.

[Chorus]

[Outro]
One day you buy, one day you love
One days you discard, but one day you pay
One day you’ll see, we’ll love one another
But before that we’ll all die, like a bunch of rats

“Not a verbatim translation, rather I tried to keep the overall message I think Stromae tried to share”
[1] really what he means is more do you want attention/love from peopleyou dont really know, nor knowing what motivated these people, Thats the best translation I could find.
[2] As in, train ticket; as in I can get the hell out of here if needs be.
[3] I think here “chanter’ is not to be translated as “sing” but more from “chantage”=”blackmail” therefore it would be I, blackmail it…in the sense of “I control it”

Stromae, in an interview with TimeOut New York:
In the opera Carmen [composer Georges Bizet] compares a bird to love. In my remix of it, I’m comparing love to the blue bird of Twitter. Like, you fall in love only for 48 hours or something, and I talk about that in my song. I’m not so radical about Twitter, but I think it’s sometimes dangerous if you think that Twitter is real life.

Stromae’s “Carmen” is a remix of the Habanera aria (a.k.a. “L’amour est un oiseau rebelle”) of the 1875 opera Carmen. Stromae’s lyrics are based off this popular stanza of the opera:

In the English Carmen, this is:
Love is a gypsy’s child
It has never known the law
If you love me not, then I love you
If I love you, you’d best beware!

On April 1, 2015, the music video for “Carmen” was released to coincide with April Fool’s Day to emphasize how modern love is starting to become more and more a joke.
