Song of the Day: Lemon Tree by Fool’s Garden

Lemon Tree” is a song by German musical group Fool’s Garden from the album Dish of the Day, which was released as a single in 1995 and became a major international hit in 1996. The single reached number 26 in the UK charts and remained at number one for several weeks in Germany. It also reached number one in Ireland and later Dustin the Turkey recorded a Christmas-parody called “Christmas Tree”. Taiwanese singer Tarcy Su(in both Mandarin & Cantonese) released covers of the song as did Korean singer Park Hye Kyung.

Lyrics:

I’m sitting here in the boring room
It’s just another rainy Sunday afternoon
I’m wasting my time
I got nothing to do
I’m hanging around
I’m waiting for you
But nothing ever happens and I wonder

I’m driving around in my car
I’m driving too fast
I’m driving too far
I’d like to change my point of view
I feel so lonely
I’m waiting for you
But nothing ever happens and I wonder

I wonder how
I wonder why
Yesterday you told me ’bout the blue blue sky
And all that I can see is just a yellow lemon-tree
I’m turning my head up and down
I’m turning turning turning turning turning around
And all that I can see is just another lemon-tree

I’m sitting here
I miss the power
I’d like to go out taking a shower
But there’s a heavy cloud inside my head
I feel so tired
Put myself into bed
While nothing ever happens and I wonder

Isolation is not good for me
Isolation I don’t want to sit on the lemon-tree

I’m steppin’ around in the desert of joy
Baby anyhow I’ll get another toy
And everything will happen and you wonder

I wonder how
I wonder why
Yesterday you told me ’bout the blue blue sky
And all that I can see is just another lemon-tree
I’m turning my head up and down
I’m turning turning turning turning turning around
And all that I can see is just a yellow lemon-tree
And I wonder, wonder

I wonder how
I wonder why
Yesterday you told me ’bout the blue blue sky
And all that I can see, and all that I can see, and all that I can see
Is just a yellow lemon-tree

……

Interpretation:

“This song is literal, because his girlfriend died in a car accident. She had crashed into a lemon tree.
He sits on the porch, maybe not absorbing what has happened. The days are rainy without her. He wonders how his outlook could change so much from one event. He’d like to change the way he views things, but he’s so lonely and feels that nobody’s trying to help him out of his rut.
He’s in a desert of joy. No joy to be found anywhere.
She had told him about the blue blue sky, but without her, he just can’t see it and wonders if he ever will again.
He doesn’t want to sit on a lemon tree. Doesn’t want to be stuck like this forever.
Maybe he’ll get another toy: something to play with, something to distract him. And everything will happen – he will start living his life again.
Beautiful and dark lyrics with an upbeat melody.” scorpio641

“Everyone says life is so great, “look at the blue blue sky”, but life seems to just constantly give you Lemons (you know, “When life gives you Lemons”, ETC). He tries to “change his point of view”, “turns his head up and down” and “turns around” but, especially when you’re depressed, it can be extremely difficult to see past all the “Lemon Trees”.
I think the “waiting for you” bit, is about him waiting for someone to help him out of this rut. Help him get away from this “lonely”, “isolated” boredom that never seems to end. Because again, when you’re depressed, nothing interests you, there’s no reason to do anything. Just sit “down here in the boring room”, “wasting time” and waiting for something to change, “But nothing ever happens”BenJeoe

There are no sources for the French girlfriend story. It’s very likely just an internet rumour.
