Song of the Day: Ruby by Kaiser Chiefs

The first sunny day after a rainy week!
Let’s celebrate with Ruby by Kaiser Chiefs.

Ruby” is a song by English rock band Kaiser Chiefs and is the lead track on their second album: Yours Truly, Angry Mob. It was released as the leadsingle from that album in the United Kingdom as a download on 5 February 2007 and as a limited edition 7 in and CD single on February 19 that year. It became the band’s first ever #1 single on 25 February 2007 and ended 2007 as the year’s 10th biggest-selling single in the UK with total sales of 313,765.

Lyrics:

(Da da da, da da da)(Da da da, da da da)

Let it never be said that the romance is dead
‘Cause there’s so little else occupying my head
There is nothing I need except the function to breathe
But I’m not really fussed, doesn’t matter to me

Ruby, Ruby, Ruby, Ruby
Aha-aha-aaa
Do ya, do ya, do ya, do ya
Aha-aha-aaa
Know what ya doing, doing to me?
Aha-aha-aaa
Ruby, Ruby, Ruby, Ruby
Aha-aha-aaa

Due to lack of interest, tomorrow is canceled
Let the clocks be reset and the pendulums held
‘Cause there’s nothing at all except the space in between
Finding out what you’re called and repeating your name

Ruby, Ruby, Ruby, Ruby
Aha-aha-aaa
Do ya, do ya, do ya, do ya
Aha-aha-aaa
Know what ya doing, doing to me?
Aha-aha-aaa
Ruby, Ruby, Ruby, Ruby
Aha-aha-aaa-aaa

Could it be, could it be that you’re joking with me
And you don’t really see you with me?
Could it be, could it be that you’re joking with me
And you don’t really see you with me?

Ruby, Ruby, Ruby, Ruby
Aha-aha-aaa
Do ya, do ya, do ya, do ya
Aha-aha-aaa
Know what ya doing, doing to me?
Aha-aha-aaa
Ruby, Ruby, Ruby, Ruby
Aha-aha-aaa
Do ya, do ya, do ya, do ya
Aha-aha-aaa (Da da da, da da da)
Know what ya doing, doing to me?
Aha-aha-aaa, aaa (Da da da)

……

Ruby is not about anyone in particular, just a name they made up. In an interview with contactmusic.com, Andrew Whitey White said: “It’s obviously about something but from our perspective it’s not written about anybody. But if you know someone called Ruby, it’s about them. It’s honestly that simple.”

In a ultimate-guitar.com interview, White said: “‘Ruby,’ to be honest, is our most radio-friendly song. That is that kind of the pinnacle of songs and a pinnacle of songwriting. We worked really hard for a great melody that’s catchy. It’s got everything in there. With the album, it flows much more. The first album was like a collection of singles, we thought. It was like a greatest hits. Big, fat, catchy songs. The second album kind of flows more. We wanted to do a much bigger, better, louder, stronger album. We wanted to create more than a collection of great singles. We’ve got 5 or 6 singles in there, but they’re hidden. They kind of flow into other songs.
This was the Kaiser Chiefs first UK #1. (thanks, Edward Pearce – Ashford, Kent, England, for all above)
This won the 2007 Best Video prize at the 2007 Q Awards. The video sees the band perform “Ruby” in a desert, as around them a tiny CGI city builds itself. It was directed by Swedish production company Stylewar, who were also responsible for the band’s “I Predict A Riot” video.
